Late arrival of drainage crew in Meldreth

by Susan van de Ven on 26 March, 2021

Residents of Meldreth High St, Station Rd, Whitecroft Rd, Elin Way and Fenny Lane will have had a letter from us recently, kindly printed and distributed by Meldreth Parish Council, to let them know that a systematic gulley emptying operation would be taking place in their road in Meldreth starting earlier this week.   Residents were asked to please avoid parking their cars over or near road drains.  Work did not start on schedule, as residents will no doubt have noticed.  I’ve been in contact with Highways and the drainage contractor today and understand that work should commence on Monday.

The reason for the delay is that this is part of a programme covering three villages – Melbourn, then Meldreth, then Shepreth. Work started in Melbourn on March 11 and only finished today, having encountered a great deal of silt in some parts of the village. The good news is that it has been done thoroughly!

The crew intends to be in Meldreth from Monday-Wednesday next week. Due to the end of the financial year, they must then leave and regroup – but that will happen.

The overall programme, as you’ll have gleaned from the letter drop, is in three stages: first gulley emptying (now); then return visits to jet drains where problems persist; then a third visit to investigate underground if problems continue. This will take months not weeks by the time all three stages are complete.

Please feel free to share this update with your neighbours – and apologies for the delay on this long-awaited job.
