Planting wildflowers along the new Shepreth-Melbourn path

by Susan van de Ven on 12 March, 2017

We’ve received a generous grant from TTP Group at Melbourn Science Park to purchase a large quantity of specialist wildflower seed mix, for planting along the verges of the new walking/cycling path. This will enhance biodiversity and look nice, too.

We need a small army of volunteers to plant the seeds. Can you help? This will involve light raking of the soil and then old fashioned scattering of the wildflower seed by hand.

If so, please come along on any or all of these dates – we’ll have groups working from the Shepreth and Melbourn ends of the path, working toward the middle.

Sunday March 19 or 26, Monday April 3 – all from 1:30-3:30PM.

And please bring a rake if you have one.

Cakes will be served!

If you can make it, please drop an email or text to Susan van de Ven at susanvandeven5@gmail.com or 07905 325574 – or just come along.

I’ve started to produce a campaign video to make the case for the Royston – Melbourn path and bridge. This version is just a rough cut – I intend to tidy up the sound mixing and a few other things – but I’d be keen to have your comments. What I hope to do over the next week is to add in some brief interviews with people who would use the path regularly if it were built – ideally people who live or work in Melbourn or Royston. Please drop me a message if you’re available to do this in the next week or two.

Terry Adams I think that looks pretty good – I’d be tempted to leave just a touch more of a gap when the scene changes occur before you start speaking – felt a little abrupt.

Aidan Van de Weyer

Aidan Van de Weyer That’s excellent. It’s only 3 miles from the Cross in Melbourn to Royston Town Hall, which sounds less significant that the 4 miles you state. (In fact, from the Leisure centre to start of the residential areas in Melbourn, it’s under 2.5 miles.)

If you are free on Monday 5PM to meet at Foxton Crossing, we’ll be taking a photo to mark small progress with Network Rail agreeing not to close the Barrington Road pedestrian gate. Part of the concern was that if they invested a lot of money doing this, they’d be disincentivised to sort the crossing out properly. Anyway, please come along if you can.

It would be good if everyone could fill out this Cambs CC survey. Background here: http://www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk/…/how_can_the_council… and the survey link here: http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/a10cyclelink/

How can the council improve cycling in Cambridgeshire?

An online survey into recent cycling improvements aims to help Cambridgeshire County Council get even more people on their bikes.

Think I saw a tree down blocking the cycle path completely about 500m South of the Foxton level crossing so be careful.

Someone has wisely suggested the newest section of path connecting Shepreth and Melbourn actually be called ‘the Incomplete Melbourn-Royston cycle path,’ to make the obvious point.

Checked with the cycling team as to the anticipated finish date. They say it should be finished according to schedule. They’ve got extra people in and are working on two sections of the path at the same time. They will then be addressing the very poor quality of sections of the original path between Frog End and Shepreth Lakes. The new maintenance scheme also kicks in as soon as this path is signed off.

Quite a few branches are down across the path, and a big chunk of tree just north of the Cambridge Motel, best keep an eye out!

Construction update: the path is now laid as far as Cherry Park Farm industrial estate, and the contractors are digging out the last section towards the Science Park. The smooth top surface is supposed to be laid next week, assuming everything is running to time.
