Over the past few months we’ve been reporting on central government’s desire for Cambridgeshire to hand over many of its decision-making powers to a single elected mayor – sidelining local input where it is so important. Various sweeteners – relatively small pots of cash and new powers, for example on bus franchising – are under offer only under a mayoral model of devolution. Some people have described these sweeteners as bribes.
My County Council colleague Lorna Dupre sums it up perfectly.
The new mayor would be elected in May 2017.
